About the Fairgrounds
SCIOTO COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS
NEARLY 200 YEARS OF HISTORY
Our Story
The story of the Scioto County Fairgrounds is one deeply rooted in the agricultural traditions and community spirit of Southern Ohio. Established in the early 19th century, the Scioto County Agricultural Society was formed with a mission to promote farming excellence and provide a gathering place for local families to celebrate their harvest and handiwork.
For decades, the fair moved between various locations in Portsmouth and surrounding areas before finding its permanent home in Lucasville. The transition to the current fairgrounds marked a new era of growth, allowing for the construction of permanent structures, designated livestock pavilions, and the expansive grandstands that have become a local landmark.
Throughout history, the fairgrounds have witnessed the evolution of American life. From the arrival of the first steam-powered tractors to the modern technological marvels of today, these grounds have remained a constant. Even during times of national hardship, the fair serves as a resilient symbol of continuity, reminding us of our shared heritage and the importance of coming together.
Today, the Scioto County Fairgrounds is more than just a place for the annual fair. It is a year-round hub for community events, car shows, equestrian competitions, and local trade days. Our facilities continue to expand and modernize, ensuring that we remain a premier venue for generations to come while carefully preserving the historic charm that makes this place unique.
As we approach our bicentennial milestones, our commitment to Scioto County remains unchanged. We strive to provide a safe, welcoming, and vibrant environment where memories are made, traditions are honored, and the future of our community is nurtured through education and shared experience.
OUR MISSION
Why We Do This
We believe that agricultural education is the cornerstone of a strong community. By providing a platform for local youth and farmers to showcase their hard work, we are investing in the future of our county. Every project submitted and every animal shown represents hours of dedication and a commitment to excellence that we are proud to support.
The fairgrounds serve as a bridge between our past and our future. While we honor the nearly two centuries of history that have shaped these grounds, we are constantly looking forward to how we can better serve our community. Our goal is to create a vibrant space where families can gather, learn, and grow together, fostering a sense of belonging that lasts a lifetime.
Ultimately, our mission is about people. Behind the grandstands and the livestock pavilions are the individuals who make Scioto County special. We provide the venue, but it is the community that provides the heart. We do this for the children who find their passion here, for the families who return year after year, and for the local heritage we are honored to preserve.

Recent Improvements

These investments reflect our promise to keep the fairgrounds a premier regional venue for another 200 years.
COMMUNITY IMPACT
What the Fairgrounds Mean to Scioto County
For nearly two centuries, these 80 acres in Lucasville have served as more than just a plot of land or a collection of barns. They are the living room of Scioto County, a place where generations of families have gathered to celebrate milestones, showcase their hard work, and pass down traditions that define our regional identity. From the first steam engines of the 1800s to the modern agricultural innovations of today, the fairgrounds have remained a constant anchor in a changing world.
The true meaning of this space is found in the quiet moments between the big events, in the livestock pavilions where a young 4-H member learns the value of responsibility at dawn, or in the grandstands where a grandmother watches her grandson compete on the same track where she once showed her own projects decades ago. This continuity creates a sense of belonging and community pride that is increasingly rare, fostering a connection to the land and to each other that sustains our county through every season.
Ultimately, the fairgrounds represent our shared investment in the future of Scioto County. By providing a stage for our youth to build confidence and our local businesses to thrive, we are ensuring that the values of grit, community, and heritage remain at the heart of our home. These grounds are a testament to where we have been and a promise of where we are going, serving as a vibrant hub where every resident can find their place in our ongoing story.
